Construction Progress Part 2

Yep, we’re catching up on a few more months of stuff.

You know you’re jealous of this face.

What’s been going on with our house???

The interior finishes and details have been pretty neat to see coming together. We don’t have a super-tidy-concise way of describing what style we’re going for, but it seems to include Scandinavian/ rustic/ hygge-ish/ easy maintenance qualities. Here are some photos to help clarify that mess of a sentence.

Reclaimed wood cabinet fronts really added to the character of our kitchen.
This is some of the prep work for doing some of the countertops ourselves (poured concrete). WE’RE NOT DOING THIS EVER AGAIN. Very time-consuming and stressful.
Here’s one of the sections of concrete countertop after having a chance to dry. We like the results, but still… we’re never doing this DIY again.

Another part of the construction process that we did ourselves, in an attempt to salvage the budget, was the front door landing and walkway. We discovered a really cool, really old Japanese wood-preserving technique called “Shou Sugi Ban” that we tried to replicate. We TRIED, lol. The landing seems like it will hold up for a while, but the walkway will eventually need replacing, unfortunately.

Jeremiah and I both got to have some fun with fire, charring the wood to help preserve it against nature’s elements. This took a long time. And lots of propane.
Jeremiah had the idea to create our landing like this after seeing something similar in a park that has held up well with lots of foot traffic.
Here’s the walkway that seemed great initially, but isn’t going to last nearly as well as the vertically oriented pieces in the landing. We’ll have to redo this (probably with concrete) in the next year or two. Kind of a bummer.
This picture reminds me to be grateful. God has been so kind to give us such beauty, as well as eyes to see and hearts to appreciate what it points to. And I’m so thankful for Jeremiah; he’s the one who gets me to pause, look up, and wonder at it all.

After some hard work outside, we’re now super thrilled to be able to go inside and warm up by a fire… even though we don’t live here just yet, it’s a place of comfort already.

I previously thought the screened-in porch would be my favorite spot; this may change that!

We’re close to moving in, folks. It’s getting real.

Until next time,

Holly
